The Department of Comoputer Scince is pleased to report about one of our Ph.D. students
(graduated in 1988 and under supervision of Dr. Iyengar), Dr. S.V.Nageswara Rao, who is a
distinguished scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is one of three lead investigators to
design a high speed computer network capable of carrying massive amounts of data. The network
is expected to operate at 10 gigabits to 40 gigabits which is about 200,000 - 800,000 times
faster than the fastest dial-up connection of 56,000 bits per second and this prototype is
funded by Department of Energy's Office of Science for 4.5 million dollars. The new name for
this network structure is called UltraNet.
The aim of this network is to link scientist at ORNL and other research institution who
increasingly rely on super computers to do trillions of calculations per second to accelerate
scientific discoveries.
