LSU CSC Industrial Advisory Board Meeting

The LSU Department of Computer Science Industry Advisory Board meeting will be held on Friday February 18, 2011 from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm,. The meeting will be held in Coates Hall, Room 256

In addition to our usual activities, we are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. John Sibley Butler as our special guest this year. Dr. Butler serves as Professor of Management and Sociology and is the Director of the IC2 Institute and the Herb Kelleher Center for Entrepreneurship and Small Business (McCombs School of Business) at The University of Texas at Austin. As Director of IC2, he is responsible for The Austin Technology Incubator, which has created over 230 enterprises. Dr. Butler is a distinguished alumnus of LSU, and earned a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Universities have been recognized as engines of economic growth for some time, but in recent years have been increasingly taking a more direct and creative role in local economic development. Our students are also no longer graduating into a world of career-long job security. We would like to focus this year's discussion on ways that entrepreneurship and economic awareness are important to our students (and their future employers), and ways that our department can help introduce and develop these characteristics. Dr. Butler will provide some context for this discussion with a short talk on the relationship between technology transfer, wealth creation, job creation, and the role of the research university, and the research models and experiments that helped transform Austin into a business powerhouse. Dr. Butler will be giving a public seminar shortly after meeting adjourns.
