College of Topical Workshops on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

From: Interim Vice Chancellor Doris Carver

Re: Topical Workshops on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

The Office of Research and Economic Development is hosting three workshops on research related to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. The purpose of these workshops is to facilitate campus-wide scientific discussion on the Deepwater Horizon spill and its far-reaching impacts. While many LSU research groups have begun organizing efforts, it is imperative that researchers on the LSU campus fully engage one another to learn from this event and its aftermath, become aware of research opportunities, and prepare to provide expert advice to decision makers based on our unique knowledge of the coastal zone, the Gulf of Mexico and its communities.

Format: The workshops will be facilitated by subject matter experts, encouraging participation from as wide a cross section of the campus as possible. Each workshop will attempt to answer three questions: 1) What do we know now? 2) What are the key scientific questions that need to be answered 3) How can our past and present research efforts help mitigate the impacts? Within each workshop, subject matter experts will provide short (5-7 minute) presentations to give background to the key issues for discussion. Each workshop will also present details on emerging funding opportunities, information on obtaining hazardous materials training for faculty and students, and details on obtaining credentials that would allow entry into oiled areas for research purposes.

All Workshops will be held in Hill Memorial Library

  1. Coastal communities: Friday June 11th, 1:00 at 2:30 pm

This workshop will address the impacts of the spill on coastal communities including, but not limited to, their economies, their social structures and demographics, and the health of their residents. Social service delivery for the diverse coastal populations will also be discussed.

  2. The Gulf: Friday June 18th, 9:00 at 10:30 am

This workshop will focus on the Gulf of Mexico as the focal point of the spill event. Topics will include, but not be limited to, the impacts on the biology and chemistry of the Gulf, the form and fate of the spilled oil and the transport of oil in the shallow and deep Gulf circulation.

  3. Coastal Zone Impacts and Remediation: Friday June 18th, 11:00 am to 12:30 pm

This workshop will address the impacts on coastal ecosystems and the remediation of spilled oils in the nearshore including, but not limited to, impacts on the biology, and chemistry of the coastal zone, the form and fate of oil in the coastal zone and clean-up technologies that might be applied to oiled ecosystems.
