LIS 7008 has two tearching modes: face-to-face and Web-based, and usually rotate every semester. The course is slightly better learned by face-to-face because technological concepts and procedures are better explained face-to-face, especially for the students who are technologically weak. Particularly it is difficult for me to walk you through a technical procedure in an online mode; instead you will need to read my tutorials to understand the technical procedure. So the major difference between face-to-face and the Web-based mode is "showing to do" vs. "reading to do." If you are a person who needs someone to stand behind you to instruct you to perform a technical task, you'd better take the face-to-face mode. However, if you can come to the TA's lab sessions, you should have no problem with the online mode. The teaching modes probably make no difference to the students who can read turorials to perform technical tasks. For distance education (DE) students, if any technical problem comes up, we will use various communication means (such as email, screenshots exchange, phone) to solve the problem.

This is a core course of the MLIS program; it aims to fill American Library Association's technological requirements on information professionals and to lay a technological foundation to many advanced courses at SLIS, therefore is very intensive and extensive. If you need to improve your information technology skills (such as MS-Access, Dreamweaver, Intro to Programming, Web Development), please consider Lynda Campus.
